Three's Company: Triple Chocolate Cookie Bars

    Feb 2, 2015 · 14 Comments

    Triple Chocolate Cookie Bars

Much like any other teenager, I went through many phases during my high school years.

I went through a cape-wearing medieval recreationist phase, a flute-playing band geek phase, a phase where I wore the same floppy hat to school for several weeks in a row, and a rather regrettable slouchy goth phase that involved lots of black.

    Triple Chocolate Cookie Bars

And then there was that phase where I made enormous chocolate chip cookies several times a week, just for the heck of it.

I'm talking cookies so big you could use them for dessert plates, with crispy edges and chewy centres and lots of chocolate chips. ...

Pucker Up: Lemon Oatmeal Creme Cookies

    Jan 5, 2015 · 24 Comments

    Lemon Oatmeal Creme Cookies

When it comes to oatmeal cookies, I'm particularly particular.

They must be chewy, but not too chewy. They must be spiced, but not too spiced. They must be soft, but not too soft.

    Lemon Oatmeal Creme Cookies

And, for the love of all that's wonderful and lovely in this world, they absolutely cannot contain raisins....

Jingle All the Way: Sweet and Salty Pretzel-Toffee Bark for #ChipitsHoliday

    Dec 15, 2014 · 3 Comments

    Pretzel-Toffee Bark

Over the last few years, I've been lucky enough to have some pretty awesome stuff dropped off on my doorstep.

Until now, though, no one has dropped off a 10 lb box of chocolate on my doorstep. Best. Delivery. EVER.

    Sweet and Salty Pretzel-Toffee Bark

That box came courtesy of the lovely folks at Chipits, who were kind enough to supply me with their entire lineup, ranging from classic semi-sweet and milk chocolate chips to fancy-shmancy options like Skor bits and mini Reese's pieces....

Welcome to Cookie Week: Chocolate Cherry Chews

    Nov 3, 2014 · 14 Comments

    Chocolate Cherry Chews

Lately it feels like I'm a hamster on a wheel, trying frantically to keep up with the months as they race by at breakneck speed.  I mean, I'd only just barely gotten used to the fact that it's already fall, and then wham! Snow.

(OK, so it was just a little flurry on a lazy Saturday morning. But still... it was literally the first day of November, dammit. Give me a week or two to acclimatise, please!)

    Chocolate Cherry Chews

My first reaction was to pull the covers over my head and spend the rest of the day hiding in bed, but I'd already planned on spending the weekend preparing for Cookie Week...

ErMahGourd... Dernerts!: Baked Chocolate Donuts with Pumpkin-Bourbon Glaze

    Oct 8, 2014 · 12 Comments

Baked Chocolate Donuts with Pumpkin-Bourbon Glaze

I have a new obsession. Like all obsessions, it's not really all that good for me, but I can't stop myself from indulging anyways.

Baked Chocolate Donuts with Pumpkin-Bourbon Glaze

Obviously, I'm talking about this recipe for Baked Chocolate Donuts with Pumpkin-Bourbon Glaze. They're just about the best thing to come out of my oven in ages, with a tender, chocolatey base that's bordering on not-sweet-enough until it's dunked into the bright orange, subtly boozy glaze....

Double the Pleasure: Double Mint Chip Ice Cream Sandwiches

    Aug 22, 2014 · 5 Comments

Double Mint Chip Ice Cream Sandwiches

Welcome to Day 5 of Ice Cream Week 2014!  This year the event is hosted by Kim of Cravings of a Lunatic and Susan of The Girl in the Little Red Kitchen, who have teamed up with 25 amazing bloggers to share some amazing ice cream recipes with you.

Double Mint Chip Ice Cream Sandwiches

As you might remember from my Day 1 post, I really really really like mint chip ice cream.... but you know what's even better?

Sandwiching a big fat scoop of that ice cream between two big, fat, chewy chocolate-mint chip cookies for a double-dose of  cold, creamy, chocolate-minty goodness....

Tooty Fruity: Raspberry Ripple Buttermilk Gelato for #IceCreamWeek

    Aug 20, 2014 · 15 Comments

    Raspberry Ripple Buttermilk Gelato

Most of you know I'll eat ice cream anytime, even in the middle of a blizzard, but it really does taste best during those unbearable dog days of summer.

    Raspberry Ripple Buttermilk Gelato

Unfortunately, summer has totally failed to deliver anything remotely worthy of being called a "dog day". And that makes it one of the crappiest summers on record, at least from an ice cream eating perspective....

Minty Fresh: Chocolate Mint Chip Ice Cream

    Aug 18, 2014 · 15 Comments

    Mint Chip Ice Cream

Hey kiddies! Guess what? It's Ice Cream Week!

Yeah, you heard me. I've joined forces with a bunch of my favourite bloggers to put together a whole week of ice creamy goodness, including three (yes THREE) posts from yours truly. Let the feasting begin!
    Fresh Mint Chip Ice Cream

Ice cream might just be my all-time favourite food, both to eat and to make, as you might have noticed based on the number of recipes I've shared over the years for ice cream and gelato (and yes, some sorbets and granitas, too).

But as it turns out, I've been holding out on you all, because I still haven't shared my favourite. So without further ado, ladies and gents, I give you my most favourite flavour of all time: chocolate mint chip ice cream.

Out of Toon: Mini Saskatoon Berry Scones

    Aug 11, 2014 · 3 Comments

    Saskatoon Berry Scones

Lately, when it comes to keeping up with this blog, I feel a little bit like that friend who's always promising to get together whenever you bump into each other, but never actually follows through. Sorry, folks... I'm kind of a rotten friend.

    Lemony Saskatoon Berry Scones

I had every intention of sharing these saskatoon berry scones a couple of weeks ago, but every time I sat down to write something to go with them, I just couldn't muster up the wherewithal to put pen to paper (or cursor to screen, more like)....

Buzz Buzz Buzz: Big Fat Chewy Cappuccino Cookies

    May 16, 2014 · 5 Comments

    Big Fat Chewy Cappuccino Cookies

After that long, rough winter we just had, this balmy spring weather has me feeling a bit like a butterfly that's just sprung free from its cocoon. A kinda-fluffy-around-the-middle, slightly-out-of-shape, not-particularly-graceful butterfly.

    Big Fat Chewy Cappuccino Cookies

That probably explains why I signed up for a 5K run a few weeks back during an impulsive fit of must-get-back-into-shape-ness, because I must have been out of my mind. The race is at the end of this month. I've gone on exactly two training runs so far. Two....

Applesauce Cookies with Browned Butter Icing

Oh hey.... looks like it's time for another round of the Secret Recipe Club! This month, I was assigned to try out a recipe from Cheese with Noodles, a blog by Anna from Alaska.

Applesauce Cookies with Browned Butter Icing

Unlike most months, it didn't take me very long to decide what to make, because it was basically love at first sight as soon as I spotted Anna's recipe for Applesauce Drop Cookies with Browned Butter Icing.

Oh Happy Day: Peanut Butter Nanaimo Bars

    Mar 25, 2014 · 29 Comments

    Peanut Butter Nanaimo Bars

I'm not one for food holidays... I mean, do we really need to devote an entire day to chocolate covered cherries or ice cream for breakfast?  Still, when one of my favourite bloggy friends decided to declare March 25th as unofficial Chocolate Peanut Butter Day, I jumped on the bandwagon, mostly because I'd been looking for an excuse to make these Peanut Butter Nanaimo Bars for ages.

    Peanut Butter Nanaimo Bars

So, what is Chocolate Peanut Butter Day, exactly? It's a fun excuse to eat some chocolate and peanut butter hosted by Carla of Chocolate Moosey and Miriam of Overtime Cook, and featuring a total of 31 awesome recipes made with... you guessed it... chocolate and peanut butter. Peanutty Perfection: Two-Bite Peanut Butter Cup Brownies

    Feb 24, 2014 · 11 Comments

    Two-Bite Peanut Butter Cup Brownies

You know those two-bite brownies?  The kind from the bakery section at the grocery store? The kind that manage to be simultaneously gooey and chewy and fudgey and chocolatey, thus embodying all the characteristics of the perfect brownie?

    Two-Bite Peanut Butter Cup Brownies

    Yeah, those.

They're kind of my weakness. And by that, I mean that I've been known to inhale an entire bag on my own if left to my own devices....

Love is in the Air: Red Wine Vanilla Roasted Strawberries

    Feb 12, 2014 · 5 Comments

    Red Wine Vanilla Roasted Strawberries

For those of us living in cooler climates, there's great irony in the fact that Valentine's Day falls well outside of strawberry season.

Maybe that's why everyone focuses on chocolate instead, so that we don't have to face the fact that our berries are most undesirable.

    Red Wine Vanilla Roasted Strawberries

This recipe for roasted strawberries is my solution to that eternal conundrum. Roasting not only enhances and deepens the flavour of the berries, it gently coaxes out their juiciness, until they slump into contented little morsels of intense strawberry flavour.  It's honestly the best thing to happen to those bland out-of-season strawberries. Ever....

Crowning Glory: Maple Bone Marrow Doughnut Holes

    Bone Marrow Maple Doughnuts

I know the first post of the new year is supposed to be something healthy, full of promises to detox from the holidays and clean up my act so that I can be appropriately svelte by the time swimsuit weather rolls around... but honestly, there was no way I was going to keep this recipe to myself.

    Bone Marrow Maple Doughnuts

I came up with it for the Crown Maple Syrup #TaptoTable Recipe Challenge, which tasked bloggers to put a savoury spin on a sweet recipe featuring their certified organic 100% pure maple syrup....

Secret Recipe Club: Debesmanna (Latvian Cranberry Mousse)

    Dec 9, 2013 · 30 Comments

    Debesmanna (Latvian Cranberry Mousse)

It's hard to believe it's already been a month, but yes, it's Secret Recipe Club time again!

My assignment for December is Culinary Adventures with Cam, a blog by Camilla, a scuba-diving, jewelry-making, photo-taking mama  from the Monterey Bay area.

    Desbesmanna (Latvian Cranberry Mousse)

I've been reading Cam's blog for a while, after first discovering it through past SRC reveals.

I admire her knack for finding interesting flavour combinations (this delicious-looking Salted Fennel Pollen Shortbread), her seriously ambitious dinner party menus (I mean, look at this masterpiece of a Thanksgivukkah menu!), and her willingness to try new cuisines, no matter how obscure or unfamiliar they might be (did you even know there's a place called Kiribati, let alone what they eat there? Because I sure didn't.)...

Book Review: Butter Baked Goods and The Dunbar (plus a Giveaway!)

    Dec 4, 2013 ·

The Dunbar from Butter Baked Goods

One of my favourite things about blogging is the opportunity to check out fabulous new cookbooks, particularly when they're as beautiful and covetable as Butter Baked Goods: Nostalgic Recipes From a Little Neighborhood Bakery by Rosie Daykin.

Much like the Vancouver bakery it's named after, this cookbook is a pastel-hued confection crammed full of delicious old-fashioned sweet treats.

    The Dunbar

Inside its pages, you'll find soft snickerdoodle cookies, Morning Glory muffins, plump cinnamon buns, meringue-topped pies, chewy blondies, frosted layer cakes, and yes, even those famous gourmet marshmallows.

In other words, just the kind of nostalgic recipes you'd expect to find in your grandmother's recipe box....

    Cookie Week: Spicy Ginger Chews

    Nov 13, 2013 · 19 Comments

    Spicy Ginger Chews

No holiday cookie tray is complete in my house without a batch of Peg Bracken's Elevator Lady Cookies from her classic "The I Hate to Cook Book".

For one, their awesome name comes with an equally awesome backstory - these spicy ginger cookies really did come from an Elevator Lady (back in the days when elevators were still operated by real live people) who, according to the book, sampled one of Peg's spice cookies and remarked "My, I can sure make a better spice cooky than that."

    Chewy Spicy Ginger Cookies

And let me tell you, Elevator Lady wasn't talking no smack. They are the be-all and end-all of spice cookies, as far as I'm concerned - soft and chewy on the inside, and beautifully crackled on the outside. And even better, they're so easy to make that they practically bake themselves....

Cookie Week: Coffee Toffee Thumbprint Cookies

    Coffee-Toffee Thumbprint Cookies

Welcome to Cookie Week! Just in time for holiday baking season, a few of your favourite food bloggers have gotten together for a week-long cookie extravaganza. Trust me, this is going to be fun (and fattening).

I figured I'd get things started with these chubby little Coffee Toffee Thumbprint Cookies.

    Coffee-Toffee Thumbprint Cookies

I got the inspiration from Greg's Ice Cream, one of my regular haunts back in high school and university. Greg's is known for making seriously delicious homestyle ice cream in all sorts of flavours, including roasted marshmallow, grape-nut cereal, and even the occasional foray into truly wacky flavours like beer....

Gooood Morning Vietnam! : Vietnamese Coffee Mousse

    Nov 10, 2013 · 21 Comments

    Vietnamese Coffee Mousse

This weekend marks a big occasion for one of my blogging buddies - Kate at Food Babbles is celebrating three years of blogging. (Which in blog years is the equivalent of, like, 10 years.)

    Vietnamese Coffee Mousse

So Kate and a few of us other bloggers got together to do what you normally do when someone hits a big milestone... we decided to celebrate!

We thought about getting a cake, but that seemed like too much hassle, so we decided to pool our funds and host a little celebratory giveaway instead - meaning one lucky reader is about to get a seriously sweet blogoversary present. (Kate, on the other hand, just gets our admiration and best wishes.)...

    I know. I have a bit of a problem.

Ghoulishly Good: Pumpkin Cheesecake Swirl Brownies

    Oct 22, 2013 · 30 Comments

    Pumpkin Cheesecake Swirled Brownies

Life is full of difficult choices.

Picking between the chicken or the pasta on the airplane (they're both bad). Vodka or gin in your martini (because both at once would be gross). Ordering just one dessert at the restaurant (they're all awesome). Choosing just one New Kid on the Block as your official celebrity crush (as long as it's not Joey, because your best friend called dibs on him first).

    Pumpkin Cheesecake Swirled Brownies

Thankfully, that's not the case with these Pumpkin Cheesecake Swirl Brownies.

These babies let you have pumpkin cheesecake and fudgey brownies, all in one delicious bite. No choosing.

If they gave out Nobel prizes for baking, I'm sure these would be right at the top of the list for giving indecisive people around the world their own dessert....

Hurray! It's time for another installment of the Secret Recipe Club.

This month, I was assigned to Cupcakes with Sprinkles, a blog by Meghan, a mother of three very adorable children who always saves room for dessert. As you might guess from her blog's name, Meghan mostly blogs about sweets, though she occasionally shares a savoury dish or snack to keep things interesting.
