Secret Recipe Club: Aloo Parathas (Indian Potato Flatbread)

    Oct 6, 2013 · 14 Comments

    Aloo Parathas (Potato Stuffed Flatbreads)

Time for another instalment of the Secret Recipe Club! This month, I was assigned to My Hobbie Lobbie, a blog by Trisha, who recently moved from Mumbai to Sydney.

I was already pretty familiar with Trisha's blog from previous SRC reveals, and coincidentally enough, she was assigned to my blog for last month's reveal, so I was thrilled to be able to return the favour so soon.

    Picking This Month's Recipe

I knew almost right off the bat that I'd be making one of the more traditional Indian recipes in Trisha's repertoire, mostly because I adore Indian food but rarely ever make it at home.

It wasn't an easy choice, though, considering her recipe index is an eclectic mix that literally covers everything from Goan-style fish stew to British-style fish n' chips!...

Secret Recipe Club: Limpa (Swedish Rye Bread)

    Jan 7, 2013 · 25 Comments

    Limpa Swedish Rye Bread

There's something about cold snowy days that makes me crave freshly-baked bread.

I suppose it's because it's the perfect excuse to stay indoors on a wintry day, while the steam from the oven fogs up the kitchen windows and gently blurs the landscape outside into indistinguishable shapes in different shades of white.

So when we returned from spending Christmas in Rhode Island to find Toronto almost knee-deep in fresh snow, I knew it was a sign I'd picked just the right recipe for this month's Secret Recipe Club post - a giant triple-loaf recipe for Limpa, a Swedish rye bread perfumed with orange, fennel and caraway seed....

The Comeback Kid: Red Fife, Rye and Fig Bread

    Jun 8, 2010 · 4 Comments

    Red Fife and Rye Bread

There was a time when much of the wheat grown in Ontario (and, for that matter, the rest of Canada) was a variety known as Red Fife. First grown in Peterborough, just a couple of hours away from Toronto, it was a hardy and adaptable variety that was perfectly suited to Canada's climate.

All good things must come to an end, though, so after spending the better part of a century as the grain of choice for Canadian farmers, Red Fife's popularity faded in the early 20th century when farmers began turning to other wheat varieties with shorter growing times and higher yields. Within a few decades, the grain that had built the Canadian prairies was all but forgotten, and might even have vanished completely if it weren't for a single pound of seed that found its way into the hands of the Heritage Seed Project in 1988. That year, Red Fife was planted in the Heritage Seed Project's fields, setting in motion a comeback of epic proportions....

    Fall Flavours: Pumpkin Sage Focaccia

    Oct 3, 2009 · 6 Comments

    Pumpkin Sage Foccacia

I've decided to accept that summer has left us, and that fall is finally here to stay.

I'm not entirely heartbroken, since fall is actually my favourite season - even on the gray, cool, rainy days like the ones we've had all week. It's a cozy sort of season, full of warm and comforting smells like dry autumn leaves, mulled cider, cedar mulch and wet grass after the rain, roasted squash, and slow-simmered stews.

Besides, one can only live in denial for so long, at least here in Canada - at some point, there's no choice but to suck it up, put on a sweater and turn on the furnace....
