On June 19th, three of the city’s greatest purveyors of smoked meat sandwiches faced off at the Wychwood Barns for the second annual Deli Duel. The aim? To prove whose smoked meat would reign supreme for another year.
After four hours and hundreds (if not thousands) of 3oz sandwiches, upstart Goldins emerged victorious with their intensely spiced Montreal-style smoked meat on light rye, snatching the coveted trophy from last year’s champ, Caplansky’s, in a surprise upset. Some might say it was the complimentary pickle that swayed public opinion, but they’d be wrong… it was all about the thick slices of rich, fatty, dark red smoked meat. The pickle was just a bonus.
